Although they are all similar and related, they are unique disciplines. Both graphic design and UI design use elements like colour, white space, typography, imagery, and grids to yield aesthetically pleasing results. However, the key distinction lies in their primary objectives.
While graphic design primarily revolves around conveying a specific message, and encompasses both print and digital media, UI design is centred around crafting and construction of digital user experiences – usually for websites and apps. UX design is focused on the creation of the user journey as they interact with a product’s interface. UI design and creation is generally thought of as a subset of the whole UX process.
UI design is the transformation of a product’s development, research, content, and layout into an appealing experience that caters to the needs of users. UI design focusers on the look, feel, and interaction of the product, including icons, buttons, colour and typography. Through thoughtful design choices, it aspires to create a beautiful, intuitive experience that not only captivates users visually but also guides them seamlessly through the product, ensuring a thoughtful and user-friendly journey.
The primary goal of UX design is to craft user experiences that are effortless, effective, and enjoyable for users. UX designer focuses on how the experience makes a user feel and how easily they can accomplish required tasks. UX design is NOT about visuals or how things look – it focuses on the overall feel of the experience.
